Jefferson County Fire District #1 Student Firefighter Program
Overview
The Student Firefighter program is very important to the Fire District. Students are assigned to work side by side with career personnel while attending classes at Central Oregon Community College. The Resident Student program is a two year program with the student completing the requirements to earn an Associated Science degree in Structural Fire Science.
Benefits
A Resident Student Firefighter earns a full scholarship through a testing process. A full scholarship includes: tuition, books, uniforms, lodging and a small monthly stipend. Resident Students will also receive added benefits for calls and training sessions they attend.
Recruitment and Selection
The primary target group for the Resident Student program are recent high school graduates. Although any age group may apply for the program. Application packet requests may be made during the months of January and February of each year. The top candidates are invited to a one day assessment center testing real life skills and abilities. Typically the assessment center will be conducted in early May of each year. Appointments are made with official start dates beginning July of each year.
Requirements
Age: Minimum of age 18 at time of appointment.
Physical Condition: Must possess and maintain the ability, endurance and strength necessary to perform the duties of a Firefighter.
Character: Must be of good character. A background check will be conducted on all candidates prior to appointment.
Oregon Drivers License: Must possess a valid Drivers License and be insurable by the Fire District insurance carrier.
