OPEN BURNING RULES AND REGULATIONS

The Jefferson County Fire District #1 under Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) regulates and enforces the open burning laws within the cities of Culver, Madras, Metolius and unincorporated areas of Jefferson County.

Open burning is defined as the burning of yard debris, paper and cardboard outside of a burning barrel. Open burning requires a valid permit. Permits may be obtained during regular business hours either at the Jefferson County Fire Station or City of Culver.


Questions and Answers

Q: What are the hours for my back yard burn?
A: Burning is allowed during daylight hours only from approximately November through May of each year.

Q: Can I burn in my burn barrel?
A: Yes - Burning in barrels is allowed with an approved barrel and screen during daylight hours only. During the fire season, approximately June through October of each year, burn barrels are allowed from dawn until 10:00 a.m. only.

Q: How long is my burning permit valid?
A: As of January 2007, burning permits are issued to an individual for life.

Q: Do I need to call and let you know I am burning?
A: No - but you must call 475-1789 to hear if it is a burn day or not.

Q: What am I prohibited from burning?
A: The following IS NOT allowed for backyard burning: wet garbage, milk jugs, wire insulation, waste oil, rubber products, food service and any industrial waste.

Q: Is backyard burning permitted on Sundays and Holidays?
A: Burning is allowed 7 days a week and including holidays.
